Edellisestä haastattelustamme on ehtinyt vierähtämään jo vajaa kaksi viikkoa. Tällä kertaa siirrymme Team Fortress 2:sta Counter-Strike 1.6:n puolelle. Näiden asioiden lisäksi esille tulee muun muassa kaksi viikkoa sitten järjestetyt IEM: World Championship -finaalit sekä viime viikonloppuna järjestetyt ESEA 5. kauden -finaalit.
Gaming.fi: Terve, olet varmasti monille tuttu Suomen skenessä.
Gaming.fi: Sitten pari viikkoa sitten järjestetyn tapahtuman, Intel Extreme Masters: World Championship -finaalien kimppuun. Onneksi olkoon hienosta 4. sijasta. Kuinka turnaus kokonaisuudessaan sujui teidän mielestä?
Gaming.fi: Voititte oman lohkonne, missä teillä oli vastassa yksi maailman parhaimmista tiimeistä eli fnatic ja IEM: European Championship -finaalien voittaja mousesports. Heti ekassa pelissä vastaan asteli fnatic, mistä nappasitte 18-12-voiton. Ainoan tappion lohkovaiheessa saitte mousesportsia vastaan. Oliko lohko teidän mielestänne kuinka helppo ja olisitteko odottaneet, että te/fnatic/mousesports menette lohkosta jatkoon?
Gaming.fi: Pudotuspeleissä pääsitte suoraan semifinaaleihin, missä kohtasitte Natus Vincere -miehistön. Heitä vastaan tuli tappio ja pronssipelissä kohtasitte SK Gamingin. Lopputuloksena oli 4. sija ja 4000 dollarin palkintopotti. Kuinka pudotuspelit sujuivat kokonaisuudessaan ja uskoitteko ennen pudotuspelejä, että teillä olisi mahdollisuudet päästä finaaliin?
Gaming.fi: Entä miten tästä eteenpäin. Joko on suunnitelmia, mitkä ovat seuraavat lanit missä teidät nähdään?
Gaming.fi: Onko sinulla jo suunnitelmia ajatellen peliuran jälkeistä aikaa?
Onneksi olkoon!

Gaming.fi: How has it been playing with american team? Is it much different relating to playing in finnish teams?
Gaming.fi: Then lets talk about your team's latest event, Intel Extreme Masters: World Championships. Congratulations for your great 4th placement. How did the tournament go by overall?
Gaming.fi: You won your own group where you had to face one of the best teams in the world at the moment, fnatic and IEM: European Championship winner, mousesports. In the first game you won fnatic with 18 to 12 and you got your only loss against mousesports. Gaming.fi: In playoffs you advanced straight to semifinals where you faced team of Natus Vincere. Unfortunately you lost that game and in match for 3rd/4th place you faced SK Gaming. The result was 4th placement and prize of 4000 dollars. How playoffs went after all and did you believe before playoffs that you would have had chances to make it to the grand final?
Gaming.fi: Then about your team's plans for the future. Do you already have any ideas what will be the next lan where you will attend?
Gaming.fi: Do you already have plans regarding the time after ending your CS-career? Are you going to end your career in Team EG or could you maybe change to some other team before ending your career?
Gaming.fi: In the future when you're going to end your CS-career, will you stay in the USA in case you end your career over there or will you maybe move back to Finland?
Gaming.fi: What do you think about Finnish eSports scene at this moment? What could cause that Finland is on this level right now when comparing for example other European countries? Even it shouldn't be about the amount of players/teams.
Gaming.fi: What do you think of CSPromod, which was published about one month ago? Was it successful and what is good/bad in it?
Gaming.fi: You travelled to Dallas for the past weekend to attend ESEA Season 5 Finals, from where you took the victory and prizepot of 6000 dollars. Congratulations for that! If we take a look at the preview done by SK Gaming, you were seeded as 1st for these finals. You played all of your matches against compLexity and Excello, which one was the best one to challenge you?
Gaming.fi: You started your journey from upper bracket semifinals and there you started your winning streak. You played a total of three matches and you won all of them without losing a single map. Besides that you played twice in a row against Excello and you won both by 2-0. Did you except that finals would be a bit more higher level than they were or did you except that taking the victory would be quite easy job for you?
Gaming.fi: Thanks for this interview! Now if you want to make any shoutouts you can go for it!
Gaming.fi: Terve, olet varmasti monille tuttu Suomen skenessä. Mutta esittelisitkö kuitenkin itsesi lukijoillemme.
- Terve!
Gaming.fi: Sitten pari viikkoa sitten järjestetyn tapahtuman, Intel Extreme Masters: World Championship -finaalien kimppuun. Onneksi olkoon hienosta 4. sijasta.
Ainoan tappion lohkovaiheessa saitte mousesportsia vastaan.
Gaming.fi: Onko sinulla jo suunnitelmia ajatellen peliuran jälkeistä aikaa?
Onneksi olkoon!
- Haluaisin kiittää kaikki Team EG:n sponsoreita. Ilman niiden apua emme pystyisi matkustamaan ja kilpailemaan kansainvälisesti.

In English:
Gaming.fi: Hello lurppis, you're well-known player in the Finnish scene. But however, could you introduce yourself to our readers?
- Hello! My name is Tomi Kovanen, I turned 22 in January and I'm better known as "lurppis" in this scene. I've played CS in LAN tournaments since the beginning of 2004 and in international tournaments since the beginning of 2005.
Gaming.fi: Lets start with your CS-career. You're playing nowadays with Team EG and you've been in the USA for almost one year. How's the life been there and have you liked it?
- Pretty good, it's not really as different as people would think even though there are obviously cultural differences. The single largest difference, other than friends/family, is the food, which might be hard for some people to adjust to. A few months after moving I already knew enough people from around the area to hang out and have fun outside of CS as well.
Gaming.fi: How has it been playing with american team? Is it much different relating to playing in finnish teams?
- The biggest difference is attitude. In all my Finnish teams (since wings/Serious) the attitude towards practice/preparation has been worthless, but in EG it's really good. Other than that, playing is roughly the same. It obviously took a while to get used to all the little things, but it's the same game that's played over here too with just little differences here and there.
Gaming.fi: Then lets talk about your team's latest event, Intel Extreme Masters: World Championships. Congratulations for your great 4th placement. How did the tournament go by overall?
- Actually, all of us felt like we didn't play too well. In the groups (other than the mouz game where I had to play without a mic making calling strats impossible) we at least won, but it still felt like we were really sloppy throughout the tournament. After we won our group we had to take two days off CS which definitely didn't help. Either way we have to be happy about the fourth place because the tournament had literally every single top team attending. At least we're still progressing at every tournament.
Gaming.fi: You won your own group where you had to face one of the best teams in the world at the moment, fnatic and IEM: European Championship winner, mousesports. In the first game you won fnatic with 18 to 12 and you got your only loss against mousesports. Did you think that your group would be that easy as it was and would you have predicted that you/fnatic/mousesports will make it to the playoffs?
- Before the group started we knew that each game was winnable as long as we took every match/round one at a time and didn't start overthinking. Like I stated previously, I didn't have a mic in the mouz match which made playing the terrorist side of inferno virtually impossible. So, it didn't really bother the team too much as we knew there wasn't really anything we could do under the circumstances. We already beat both AGAiN (FX) and mTw at Arbalet Cup in December so we knew we could easily beat both, and we kind of assumed we would beat oXmoze without any bigger problems. I guess in a way we all expected to make top three with mouz and fnatic, but we had no idea about the order prior to the tournament.
- We were really confident about beating Na`Vi in the semifinals and I believe one big reason for the loss was the two day break from CS while Na`Vi got to play every single day. We played really badly and sloppy and you could see it from the scores. Against SK we won inferno easily, had no chance on train and then blew nuke after losing their save round when we should have had the match in a bag. In other words, we should have made the finals and we also should have won the third place game.
Gaming.fi: Then about your team's plans for the future. Do you already have any ideas what will be the next lan where you will attend?
- We have the online finals of an online league called CEVO in about 3-4 weeks and after that the next tournament should be Arbalet Cup which will be held in Stockholm sometime in May.
Gaming.fi: Do you already have plans regarding the time after ending your CS-career? Are you going to end your career in Team EG or could you maybe change to some other team before ending your career?
- When I quit CS I'll go do my mandatory army service and then continue school. EG will be the last team that I play for, I already said that about CrackClan, but I simply couldn't say no to moving to the USA and playing for an international team. With that said, I really doubt I would play for another team.
Gaming.fi: In the future when you're going to end your CS-career, will you stay in the USA in case you end your career over there or will you maybe move back to Finland?
- I've actually thought about that, and I might stay in USA for at least a little while just because I like to live abroad. I doubt I will live the rest of my life in Finland.
Gaming.fi: What do you think about Finnish eSports scene at this moment? What could cause that Finland is on this level right now when comparing for example other European countries? Even it shouldn't be about the amount of players/teams.
- It's pretty hard to say because I haven't really been a part of it for almost a year, but I assume the problem is still the same. It used to be the lack of structure. Since there are no leagues in Finland it's hard for teams to keep stable rosters and not bring a new lineup to every single LAN. If everyone played leagues (i.e. ESEA/CEVO) instead of the CB ladder it would be a lot easier for teams to stick together and they would slowly get better. I think the only "real" team in Finland right now is Playzone.
Gaming.fi: What do you think of CSPromod, which was published about one month ago? Was it successful and what is good/bad in it?
- It still needs a bunch of small fixes, but once the model fix comes in which fixes the sizes of player models, I believe it will be good enough for use in tournaments. It doesn't really matter too much to me which game (1.6/CSS/CSP) is played in tournament as long as all tournaments/players used the same one.
- coL was clearly the better team and we've always had trouble playing them even though we're now 7-0 in maps (and 16-7 avg score) since goodfornothing joined. In the Excello game we knew we were a much better team and we were really confident we'd win 2-0 both times. When we faced coL we could just as easily have lost against them if small things went the other way around.
- Like I stated previously, we knew/thought we were a lot better than Excello and knew we could win each match 2-0 even if the scores in the individual maps would be close (which they didn't end up being).
Gaming.fi: Thanks for this interview! Now if you want to make any shoutouts you can go for it!
- I'd also just like to thank all of the sponsors of Team EG. Without the help from them, we wouldn't be able to travel and compete internationally.
